What is a porcelain veneer?
A porcelain veneer is a thin piece of porcelain placed over the front of a tooth, used to recreate the natural look of teeth, while also providing strength and resilience comparable to natural tooth enamel. Porcelain dental veneers is a fabulous treatment option when the tooth enamel has become worn, chipped, discoloured or to mask minor misaligned teeth. The treatment provides a natural appearance with minimal tooth adjustment. It is often the material of choice for those looking to make slight position alterations or changes to the tooth size or colour.
Dental porcelain veneers are a popular cosmetic dental treatment to correct or rejuvenate the smile. They improve the appearance of your front teeth and give you the straight white smile you’ve always wanted.
A veneer is a facing on the front of your teeth; usually your top teeth. It is similar to a false finger nail. Veneers are made out of Porcelain, and most often used to improve the appearance of your teeth. At the VRDC, all clinical options are explained to our patients before we recommend porcelain veneers so that you can make an informed decision.
Veneers and dental imperfections
Veneers are thin pieces of tooth-coloured porcelain that are custom made to naturally fit your mouth, mask smile imperfections like the following:
- Teeth with gaps or crooked teeth
- To cover heavily stained or discoloured teeth
- Worn or chipped teeth
- Misaligned teeth
Why choose porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers make teeth look natural and healthy. They are very thin in appearance and are held in place by a special strong bond agent that is similar to super glue. The veneers require very little preparation and can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth.
Patients can also select a precise shade of porcelain to improve a single discoloured or stained tooth, or to brighten the shade of the front teeth, usually the upper ones, in general.
What are the other applications of veneers?
Veneers can also be used to close small gaps when orthodontics (braces) aren’t suitable. If a single tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others
Dental veneers are light ‘shells’ that improve the shape and position of your front teeth. Made of porcelain or composite (white filling) materials, they are a popular cosmetic dental treatment for patients when front teeth are crowded, gapped, broken, or have treatment-resistant stains. They are bonded over your natural teeth to give you a smooth, white, and symmetrical smile.
What is the treatment process for dental porcelain veneers at VRDC?
Firstly, a consultation to assess the suitability of your teeth being fitted with dental porcelain veneers will be carried out with the use of X-rays and photos. You will then require 2 visits to the dentist.
During the first session, your dentist will gently remove a small layer of your tooth enamel to support a suitable bonding surface for your veneers. Then a precise scan will be taken of all your teeth (instead of having impressions taken) and then temporary veneers will be put over the teeth to protect them whilst the veneers are being made.
The scan of your teeth will be sent straight to the laboratory digitally and the new permanent dental porcelain veneers is created in the laboratory by trained technicians
When the veneers come back from the dental laboratory, we bond the veneers with a special dental adhesive after ensuring that you are pleased with the results. In some instances a follow up appointment to assess the progress of the dental treatment may be required, but this will be discussed with you by your dentist
Whether you are seeking to improve the appearance of a single crooked tooth or looking for a complete smile makeover, dental porcelain veneers are an ideal option for effective and affordable smile rejuvenation.
