Cosmetic bonding (also known as tooth bonding, dental bonding or composite bonding) is a technique that can be used to treat your teeth and provide a healthy and attractive smile.
Cosmetic bonding is when tooth coloured resin material is applied and hardened using a special light. This light actually bonds the resin material to the tooth to improve the look and appearance of the smile.

About cosmetic bonding
What is direct composite bonding?
Direct Composite Bonding – is the process where dentists use tooth-coloured composites white or natural-looking materials) to fill cavities, repair chips or cracks, close gaps between your teeth and build up the worn-down edges of teeth. The composite materials may also be directly applied and sculpted to the surfaces of teeth that show most prominently when you smile, for minimally invasive smile makeovers. In the dental world these are called direct composite veneers but generically known by most as “bonding.”
What is adhesive bonding?
Ag adhesive bonding is the process of attaching a restorative treatment to a tooth. This method is commonly used for aesthetic Examples include dental crowns, dental bridges, porcelain veneers, dental inlays and onlays. After your dentist has chosen a colour that matches the shade of your teeth, they will roughen the surface of the tooth using a gentle phosphoric acid solution. Afterwards the roughing agent is removed, and a liquid bonding agent is applied. A tooth coloured putty-like resin is applied to the tooth, this is then moulded until it’s in the desired shape. An ultraviolet curing light is then used to harden the area. Additional bonding agent and ultraviolet curling light hardening is repeated until the filing or direct composite veneer has reached its final shape. Our specialist dentist will then polish the material until it matches the sheen of the rest of the tooth surface.
What are the benefits and setbacks of using bonding for dental treatment?
Benefit – Cosmetic Bonding is one of the most common and least expensive of cosmetic dentistry procedures. It can usually be done in one short visit unless several teeth are involved. An additional benefit is that tooth enamel requires very little or no removal compared to dental veneer and dental crown treatment.
The material used in dental bonding is not as strong as your real teeth, so biting on fingernails or chewing on pens can actually chip the material. Bonding only lasts a few years before it needs to be repaired and is not as strong as other dental restorative procedures available at the Victoria Road Dental Clinic, such as crowns, veneers, or fillings.
There are limitations with restorative dental treatments, in these situations dental bonding may be the recommended d by the dentist. Examples include minor cosmetic changes, the correction of teeth in areas where there is low bite pressure (like the front teeth) and in the use for correction of cosmetic defects. Your dentist will be able to tell you if bonding is correct procedure for you or may make other recommendations relative to your personal conditions.
Smile makeover with a porcelain veneer?
If you are looking for a smile makeover, a porcelain veneer is an effective and affordable treatment with amazing outcomes. Veneers are ideal when the enamel in the tooth enamel has become worn, chipped, discoloured or to mask minor misaligned teeth. The treatment provides a natural appearance with minimal tooth adjustment. It is often the material of choice for those looking to make slight position alterations or changes to the tooth size or colour.
