Dental implants are an excellent way for your dentist to replace your missing teeth. At Victoria Road Dental Clinic in Ruislip, our implantology team have treated many patients successfully with implants, restoring not just a beautiful smile but also their quality of life as they are once again able to enjoy a healthy and balanced diet, including their favourite foods.
How dental implants work
Dental implants are bionic tooth roots. Made from titanium, which is very safe and highly compatible with the human body, they are placed in direct contact with your jaw bone in a minor operation, which is carried out under local anaesthetic at our Ruislip dental practice so you should experience no pain. Any post-operative discomfort is usually mild and can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers.
Your dentist will usually leave your implants to heal for a couple of months before attaching permanent replacement teeth on top. During this healing period, the dental implants integrate with your bone. Because titanium is osteoconductive (meaning it supports bone growth) your bone will grow around the implants, helping to prevent the common side-effect of missing tooth that is bone loss.
Once your dental implants have integrated with your bone sufficiently, your dentist will restore your teeth using either crowns, dentures, or a bridge, depending on the number of teeth that need replacing and your individual preferences.
At our Ruislip practice we also offer All-on-4 implant treatment, which enables your dentist to restore a full arch (jaw) of teeth using just four dental implants. Thanks to careful planning and precision placement, these implants will be able to support all of your new teeth, withstanding the forces generated by biting and chewing.
